About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Multi city ticket

I'm an American citizen traveling from SFO -> Hong Kong, then Shanghai -> SFO, with a multi-city ticket. From Hong Kong to Shanghai, I purchased a one-way ticket. I will be in Shanghai less than 72 hours. Am I included in the 72- hour allowance? Can I just show up?

Many thanks.

Hi Christina, do you also have the ticket from Shanghai to SFO? If yes, you qualify for the 72-hour free transit. You can show the onward ticket and your passport, but before the flight arrives in Shanghai, you need to tell the airline staff that you want to use this policy.

Thanks Kent! I do have the ticket from Shanghai to SFO. So I tell the airline staff about this when I land in Shanghai, or when I go to the airport departing Shanghai?

You should tell the airline about this before landing in Shanghai.
