We are traveling to China to visit our son (and his family) who is working in Shanghi. Can we just get a L visa or do we need to do the S2. He does not have his residency permit yet so it would be easier for us to just do the L. We will be staying with them for less than 30 days.

Well, you just need to apply for an L type. It's OK.
