Renew China's ID card

I have a China ID card, it will expire in January 2017. I'm going to Hong Kong soon, can I renew the card when it has another 14 months before expiring?

Aimie, do you hold HKID or mainland Chinese ID? If you hold mainland Chinese ID card, you need go to Chinese police station where your household is registered to apply. It's fine to renew. If you have HKID, then you need renew in HK. It's ok to renew if you don't have time to return to HK before it expires.
