About:Marriage Registration in China

2 U.S Citizens getting married in Shanghai...is that possible?

I'm U.S Citizen. My fiance is also a U.S. Citizen, but he was born in Shanghai. His parents are Chinese Citizens that were born and reside in Shanghai. We wanted to get married in his home town, is that possible? Can two U.S. Citizens get married in Shanghai? Is it legal? Is there any paper work I need to fill out before hand or after to make it legal? Can I have the ceremony there and make it official when I get back to the States? Will the date I get married in Shanghai be my officail wedding date? New Bride a little overwhelmed. Please help! Thank you! :)

Yes, you can get married in Shanghai. If you register your marriage at the local civil affairs bureau, it will be legal. Both of you need to get a single-status certificate from the US consulate in Shanghai. Alternatively, you can have the ceremony there and make it official after you get back to America. The date of the ceremony is not the same with the official wedding date. The official wedding date is the date when both of you go to the civil affairs bureau and get your marriage books.
