Lynda, you can tip according to their service, usually 1 to 10 dollars per day.

We had a glorious two weeks in China, visiting the major sights. The two of us had our own English speaking Guides, plus Drivers. Two of the four Guides asked for tips. The Chinese frown on tipping. The first time this happened, I was so taken aback that I gave the Driver £11 for three days. I was told that this was not enough. I asked "if we had been Chinese, would we have been asked for a tip" Answer "No". I asked "When you (the Guide) uses a taxi, does he/she give a tip" Answer "No". I inform them that no-one in the UK ever asks for tip, it is rude and unacceptable. The Guides dissolved in front of us and pleaded that we did not advise their Bosses. No more tips were given

Peter, you are absolutely horrible. Some Chinese do expect tipping because their salaries are very low. Don't state that " Chinese don't expect tipping". The tour agency I use - they advise when and which area expects tipping. Yes it is different for every area. One area doesn't do tipping because they see it as "corruption" as in bribes and another does like tips.

Lynda,

you may tip reasonably...but the tip suggested above 9000 RMB for a group of 18 is higher than the monthly salary of more than 50% of Chinese... tips are not supposed to be higher than your normal salary. The 1 to 10 dollars per day suggestion is reasonable but this is for a whole group of persons !

otherwise do not wonder why some taxi drivers at each airport try to trick foreigners away from the normal taxi line, or in the case here if Peter negotiated all included pricing, he may or may not tip.

it is very rude and unacceptable to ask for a tip. Tours usually include gratuity. My 10 day tour includes gratuity. (US$)
Was told not to tip while in China. it’s an insult to the business in China.
