Travel in China with 2 months left in passport

I will be traveling in China in one month. By then, my passport (USA) will expire in 2 months (November). My visa is valid until then. Am I allowed to travel? I also have a HK Home return Permit which expires in 2020, but I did not enter on that. Can I travel on that instead?

You mean you want to enter on your US passport and PRC entry permit? I think it's very risky to do so. However, you still have a chance to enter. The six-month validity of passport is not required. You should confirm this with the immigration office of the city through which you plan to enter.
