Question

Should I start from Xi'an all the way to Urumqi? Or fly to Urumqi, then to Turpan & Dunhuang? Thanks

I suggest you set off from Xian, which was the starting point of the silk Road. Just take train to accomplish the folowing route: Xian - Lanzhou - Dunhuang - Turpan - Urumqi, and the route enables you to see the current landscape of the old silk road. This website has some tour packages of Silk Road covering Xian, Urumqi and the places you mentioned. You can also refer to their routes.
