Yes, you need to get it through the Chinese embassy in your country. The following papers are needed:
1. A truly filled application form
2. A valid passport and a phtocopy of the used pages
3. A economic status proof, such as passbook, bank statement, employment certificate, etc.
4. Round-way tickets and hotel reservations
5. Travel itinerary.
