Need help connect to WI-FI in Guilin China

Recently returned from Guilin( 5/25/15 - 6/25/15 ). I could accomplish everything I wanted to with my Samsung Galaxy note edge via cell service data package only. ( Gmail, google translate, google search )
My phone showed Wi-Fi routers everyone, it even said I was connected. Yet things either didn't work or work so slow it was unusable. I will be returning in a few months and I would like to take my laptop and have my smartphone connect up to save me money. thx

Jim, Google and its all service and youtube, facebook, twitter etc have been blocked here in China. If you plan to use them here, you need to install or buy VPN service. Without VPN service, you can't use them even you are connected to free wifi.

You say it is all blocked. Not true. It all worked fine when I connected via my phones cell service/data package. Only when attempting to connect to their routers did it fail.
fyi I saw on the web where there is a Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge for USA and another for China. Two different model numbers, SM-G925, SM-G9250. I've emailed Samsung for some details and have yet to hear a reply. I'll post it when I get it. thx for your response.
