About:How to Travel to China without a Visa

Indian Passport holder - transit time in Bejing - 14 hours.

I know I do not need a transit type to be in transit area. But do I need any type to get out in the city for a sightseeing/restaurants/shopping/etc?

Abu, if you want to go out of the airport, you need to apply for a temporary stay permit at the airport.
