I want to apply for a Chinese student visa.

If I got my x1 for 1 year. And then applied for residence permit. What will happen if I could not attend the classes? Should I pay the course fee first? Or I'll pay when I start the course? In case if I changed my mind and not study. Can I still have my x typeand stay in china legally?
