Apart from prestige of R visa, what is the difference between R and Z?

Arguably, applying for R type is harder than z type, so why apply for R?

Dave, if you can get the R type, you can get a temporary residence permit valid for five years. With this, you can travel in and out freely during the five years. What's more, if you can get the R type, you have a chance to get the Chinese permanent residence.
