About:China Private Visit Visa

Which visa should I apply for? Can't be S1 as we're not married? Maybe D?

My boyfriend is a foreigner (UK) working in China. I plan to go and stay with him for around 2 years.

No, you can't apply for the S1 type as you are not married. You can't get the D type either. It is only issued to those who have go the PRC permanent residence.

After you arrive in China, do you have the plan to study or work? If yes, you can apply for an X type or Z type.

My boyfriend had a call yesterday with his embassy in Shanghai. They told him, that they can provide a kind of official certificate with stamp to confirm our partnership and that we are living in the same address in Shanghai. (So far flat needs to be found, we are still in Europe). We are not married. Apparently with this document I shall be able to apply for a long-term one(we don't know, if either S or dependend Z).
Currently I'm holding a L for 2 entries, can I convert it on site? Does anyone has experiences with this kind of official certificate and the conversion?

Sarah, S1 requires your marriage certificate and your husband's invitation letter. If you are unmarried, I don't think you will get the S1. As for Z type, it is issued to those who work in PRC. There is no dependent Z type. If you just hold short-term L type, I think you have very little chance to change it to other types. According to what I know, only those who have resident permits in PRC are able to do the conversion. Anyway, you can ask your BF to consult with local entry and exit management bureau.
