does the invitation letter need to be on letterheadfrom a chinese national?

We are applying for  Chinese Tourist Visas to visit our son who is studying in Tianjin.  I was told if he sends us a letter of invitation, we will not need to submit hotel reservations with our application. What does he need to include in this invitation?
