About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Is it possible to apply for a Thai visa within the 72 hour time frame?

I am a Canadian citizen looking to renew my non-immigrant B Thai entry permit. Would it be possible to head to the Thai Embassy in Shanghai to run without obtaining a Chinese entry permit?

Yes, Holly., during the 72 hours, you can go to the consulate to renew your Thai non-immigrant B type, but you can't fly from Thailand to Shanghai and then directly back to Thailand. This route does not meet the requirements for the 72-hour free transit policy.
