About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit FAQ

Visa question on USA-Chengdu (Hong Kong 2 hr layover) then Beijing-USA trip?

I am a US citizen with a single entry visa for China. I arrive on July 2nd in Chengdu from the USA via Hong Kong. Then I leave on the 19 from Chengdu to Beijing via Hong Kong arriving at 5 PM. Then I leave Beijing on the 22 at 10 AM to the USA. Can I do this trip with just a single entry visa to China? Do I need to apply for the 72 hr free transit?

RC, your route is ok (HK-Bejing-USA). However, I am afraid that the immigration at Beijing Airport might think that you just make use of 72 hours free transit policy to avoid applying for the entry permit. You know, you just transit in HK for 2 hours. And it's easy to go to BJ from Chengdu without leaving mainland. The immigration officers have the reason to believe that you are trying to avoid the entry permit.

I personally think that you'd better apply for a double entry one, to play it safe.
