what visa do I need if l leave Heathrow and fly to Nanjing via Shanghai and return via Hong Kong?

Hi Nelly! If your overall layover time in mainland does not exceed 24 hours, you don't need the entry permit. If the time is longer, you can apply for a G or L type.
