Tourist(L) or Non-Commercial Business (F)? What if I can't get documentation?

I am travelling as tourist as well as going with my cousin and staying with her relatives. If I haven't bought my plane ticket yet or don't know if I am staying at a hotel, how do I provide information and documentation for the itinerary and travel? I am unable to get an invitation letter either.

Leslie, for F type, invitation letter is required. If you don't have the invitation letter from China, you can not apply for it. For L type, if you don't have the invitation letter, you are required to provide hotel booking and return air ticket.
