Can I get my student (or otherwise tourist) visa from Hong Kong?

I am planning to do my thesis in Mainland China but my university application (for the JW202 form) is taking longer than anticipated. I already have a ticket to HK (to fly on from there).
And if my university application turns out to fail, can I still get a L type in HK to go to Mainland China?

Jay, it's required that if you apply from Hong Kong, you should hold HK residence permit. If you don't have one, then it's very hard to get the X type or L type from there. Therefore, just wait patiently for your JW202 form and do the application in your country. If you fail to get this form, then apply for an L type instead.

Hi Rose, Thank you for the reply.
I have been reading that for people without a residence permit it should still be possible through a visa center? Is this not the case?

Jay, perhaps some agencies can do this for you. You can have a try.
