Anula, to apply for HK residence, your husband should meet the following prerequisites: age (above 18); financial requirement (capable of supporting and accommodating himself and his dependants (you and your son) on his own financial resources without relying on public assistance during his stay in Hong Kong); good character (he should not have any criminal record or adverse immigration record in Hong Kong or elsewhere), language proficiency (be proficient in written and spoken English); basic educational qualification (good education background, normally a first degree from a recognized university or a tertiary educational institution).
If he meets all those requirements, he can submit the application for all of you to the Immigration Department. After that, he will go through point-based test and selection exercise. If he gets a quota in the selection exercise, he will be issued with an Approval-in-principle letter. Then he is required to attend an interview and present originals of all documents submitted during the application to the Immigration Department for verification. If all the documents are satisfactorily verified and all relevant application procedures are finalized successfully, he can get the residence permit for himself and dependant residence for you and your son.
