hello! need to know best time to apply for chinese resident permit

Question

My wife is Chinese and this year we go to finish papers to own homes in Shanghai as her family has bequested  it to us. We plan on me retiring in about 5yr when son is done with collage. Should I apply now or wait till we ready for retirement time..Thank You   Milton Alexander

Milton, could you please clarify you want to apply for the permanent residence or just temporary residence permit? If your answer is the latter, then you can apply for it at any time. If your answer falls into the former, then I'm afraid you cannot apply for the permanent residence at present.
