S.African on holiday in Asia, planning to go to China next

Hi, I've been in Thailand for a while, going to Malaysia in two days time. I want to visit my friend in Beijing after that. I have a few questions. One, do I need to get the L visa for my holiday and can I stay 30 days or longer? What is the maximum stay period on an L type?
Can I go to a Chinese embassy on or near Penang island? This is where we will go for some sightseeing next week.
Furthermore, I have just obtained a new passport that was mailed to my embassy in Bangkok. My old passport is used up. Will the Chinese embassy be able to start new in the new passport?

1. Yes, you should apply for a L type. The duration for each stay is usually 30 days. However, there are some people who acquire 60 days duration of stay. Don't feel disappointed if you just got 30 days duration. You actually can extend it once at local entry and exit management bureau. It means that you still have a chance to acquire another 30 days.

2. I am afraid that you can't apply from Chinese embassy in Penang Island. You need to apply from the CVASC branches in Kuching or Kuala Lumpur.

3. You should use your new passport to apply. I think you should bring your old passport too.
