Do you need Chinese ID to buy a railway ticket ?

Last time I tried to take the Shanghai to Hangzhou train, you needed Chinese ID to buy a ticket.
I could not find any other ticket office so I gave up and got an expensive limo.

Oh, foreigners can buy the train tickets with their passport. But they need to go to railway station, as most ticket outlets cannot issue ticket for those who buy with passports.
