Bringing Cash for a Donation and Personal Expenses

Hi:

We're from the US (two of us) and are adopting a child from China. We have to make a 35,000 RMB ($5,800 US) donation to the orphanage is cash. We can probably get documentation for that. We were planning on bringing about $4,200 US for personal expenses, for a total of $11,000. We will be entering china, then going to Hong Kong, then returning to China before returning to the USA.

Outside of t-shirts and other small souvenir items, most of our cash will be for meals, taxis, baby needs, etc, and the donation to the orphanage after we enter China the second time. At each port, we plan to depart with less than we entered with. Are we going to have to pay tax on our cash at all 3 of the ports?

Patrick, you can take as much as 5000USD cash per person. In total, you can take 10000USD. I think that you may bring a debit or credit card so that you can withdraw the money after you arrive.

OK, I see the $5,000 USD limit on TravelChinaGuide, but it also mentions a 20,000 RMB limit, which is not equal to $5,000 USD. $5,000 USD converts to about 30,900 RMB. I'm a bit confused.

Oh, relax! The regulation is flexible. If taking RMB, the limit is 20,000RMB for one person. If you take foreign currency into China, the value should be less than or equals to 5,000USD.
