Bicycles on train from Urumqi to Kashgar?

Hello,

My friend and I are travelling by bicycle, we started in Bangkok and cycled to Xichang in Sichuan from there. After that we had to get public transport because our visas are running out and we cannot extend then any more.

We tried to put our bicycles on the train from Xichang to Chengdu (which we know people have done before) but they wouldn't let us. So we had to get the bus. The same thing happened when we tried to get the train from Chengdu to Urumqi, so we've just sat through a 54 hour bus ride. We now want to get a train to Kashgar before cycling over the border to kyrgyzstan. Can you please tell me if the same thing is going to happen? I don't think we can face another long bus journey and we don't know why we haven't been allowed bikes on the train, because we've met other people that have done it!!

Thanks very much,
Hannah

Bicycle is prohibited inside passenger carriages for safety reasons. But you can use railway baggage consignment service to transport it to your destination. No worry.

Hello Dave,
Thanks very much for your reply!
Do you know if there are any weight restrictions for the baggage car?

Each railway ticket allows a maximum of 50kg consigned baggage. But this does not mean you cannot consign more than 50 kg. If exceed, the service fee will be much higher.

Hi,
Sorry to bother you again, I have a couple more questions.
1. Do the bicycles have to go to the station the day before?
2. Do the bicycles go on the same train as us, just in a different carriage?
3. Do we need to find boxes and take the bikes apart in order to take them onboard?
Thanks!

1. You haven't to do so. But if your time permits, you can do it a day before so your bike is waiting for you there when you arrive.
2. Trains from Urumqi to Kashgar are ordinary types, which have freight carriages in most cases. Thus, there is great chance your bikes will travel on the same train with you, just in a different carriage. However, if the freight carriage is full. Your bike may travel on an earlier or later one.
3. There is box at the consignment office. But you need to pay for it. Bikes are not asked to be took apart. You can consign it wholely. However, there may be some damages in that case
