Can i change my "family residence permit" to a "work residence permit" without leaving china?

I currently hold a "temporary residency permit for family" (my wife is Chinese). If I become the legal representative of a Chinese WOFE, am I able to simply "swap" the type from "family" to "work"? without leaving? or do I have to go through the whole song and dance of exiting the country, applying for a Z type etc?
