Yes, Debbie, you need to get an L type entry permit in advance from the CVASC office in Italy. The following documents may be required to submit: your valid passport, a photocopy of the passport, a filled-out applicaton form attached with your recently-taken color bare-headed photo, and round-trip tickets and hotel reservations.
