About:Power Plugs / Sockets in China

Is the 220 VAC in China single-ended or are both sides of the 220 V above ground (like US 220 VAC)

The US 220 VAC configuration is where both sides of the line is above 110 VAC above ground. You can measure 110 V from either side of the line to ground, and 220 VAC across them. Does the Chinese system work the same way, or is it more like the 110 V system in the US, where the three wires would be, 220 VAC, Ground for 220VAC, and Earth (Safety Ground)? If it is like this, then there is 0 volts between the earth ground and the low side of the 220 VAC.

Doug, there are usually live line, null line and earth line. There is a voltage between the live and null lines, and live and earth lines. However, there is no voltage between earth and null lines.

Lee, Thank you for confirming my suspicions. I bought a small Chinese water heater from banggood.com that was designed for use with 220 VAC. I want to modify it to run on 110V, so now I know exactly what I am dealing with. Next step is to trace out the circuit board to see what limits operation to 220V.

Doug, is it really so complicated? You may check its voltage carefully. If its range is from 110V to 240V, I think you can use it directly without modifying it. You know, some of my friends study in USA. They just buy adaptors for the plugs. Most appliances have already supported a voltage from 110 to 240V.
