Chinese Pop Music, Mandopop, Cantopop, and even J Pop and K Pop owe their ancestral roots to a happy collaboration between Li Jinhui, who had a keen interested in collecting folksong, and Buck Clayton, an African American Jazz trumpeter and band leader. What emerged was Shanghai Jazz, the forerunner of Chinese Pop Music.
