According to the official policy, you can only use passport for travel. If you are in China now, you can try to go to the station can ask for help from the police security window which offer the identity verification for Chinese people. You can see if they can do something for you. I also heard that if you have emergency for passport using, you can have your passport out from the visa office for some time and give it back later. You can also ask your visa office to see if it works.

Hello Vickey

I am in the same situation at the moment. I have the yellow paper they gave me in the visa office which is stamped and it has my picture. I had already purchased plane tickets to shanghai a long time ago and now I'm wondering if they'll let me board the plane with the yellow paper and perhaps a copy of my passport and also whether they'll let me check into the hotel.

Can you please tell me if you were able to travel without your passport?

I'd appreciate it very much.

Thank you!

Hi Dani,

its mainly depend on the airlines, i tried to confirm from few airlines but all said NO i can't travel without passport. you can check with some Airlines may be they will allow, please confirm from airlines before booking ticket.

So i was travelling through long distance sleeping bus, it was very comfortable and they don't need ID to book ticket.

I traveled by train using the yellow slip they gave me. A friend of mine traveled even by air using this paper. Domestic journeys are no problem I think.

Hello, i also had the same problem. I’m in Guangzhou. I went back to the immigration office and asked them there. They sent me back to where I gave them my passport and I told them the situation. They put a stamp on my receipt and said it should be fine to travel within China. So I’m hopeful it will work tomorrow when I go to the airport.i showed them my flight information and they assured me it should work. I’ll update when I try.

The short answer is No - you can not travel. Charles gave some suggestions but none apply in your situation.
You need your actual passport to travel long distance [outside the city].

However, I have noticed that on the fast trains, when you get the ticket on board the train, they do not ask for your passport.
Also if you can try to buy a ticket from a scalper.
