Fly Taipei-Chengdu, then Chengdu-HongKong-US. 72hr visa works?

Hi I'm a US citizen, flying from Manila (through Taipei) to Chengdu. Plan to spend 2 days in Chengdu. Then return via Hong Kong to US. Does that meet the 72hr transit no-vsia requirement? Thanks!
