I'm visiting China & HK on a study trip. How do I apply for a Chinese visa? Do I need a HK one too?

Mark, you don't need one for HK. To enter mainland China, you can apply for an F or L type. First prepare the required documents, like passport, a photocopy of it, an application form, a personal color photo taken within six months, and an invitation letter from a relevant individual or organization in China, or round-trip tickets and hotel bookings. Then go to the CVASC office to submit your application or mail your application there.
