transit without visa in China

I will be flying to Shanghai from Japan and will board a cruise ship to America. I will arrive in the morning and board the cruise ship the same day. Will have come and gone within 12 hours. Will I need a visa or not? And if so what kind?

Charlie, you don't need it, as you can make use of the 24 hour free transit.

I was asking because I had seen a number 0f comments that it had to be airline to airline transits not airline to cruise ship. Do you know where I could find that in some official publication? Thanks

Airline to airline transit requirement is for 72 hour free transit, not for 24 hour direct transit. The 24 hour direct transit policy is available in airports as well as other ports.

OK Rick, I'll give it a shot. Hope they let me out of the airport to go to the dock. Thanks
