carnival cruise ship 22 may 2015, one day shanghai 72 hour visa?

Husband and wife will be visiting Shanghai one day only 22 May on Sun Princess cruise ship.  We will have Australian passport and arrive and depart on the same ship on the same day.  Can we do this on a 72 hour transit?  Alan Wilson Canberra Australia

How long will you stay in Shanghai? If it is less than 24 hours, you needn't apply for any type. However, it is longer than 24 hours, you'd better apply for a G type in advance. 72 hours free transit is only applied to those who fly in and out.
