I think it's OK to apply for the X type as long as you are admitted by an authorized school in China. Basic documents you need to submit are your passport and its photocopy, a filled application form, and a recent passport size photo. Supporting documents include the original and photocopy of your admission letter. If you are applying for the X1 type, which allows you to stay for more than 180 days, you should also submit the JW 201 or JW 202 form. For Filipino applicants who come to China for the first time, they should also provide the proof about their financial standing.

If you are not going to China for the first time, the financial stnding proof is not needed. However, sometimes, the officer may ask you to submit it.
