Which VISA should I apply? What about invitation letter?

Hi there,
I owns a consulting business in the U.S.A and I am looking to go to China to explore business opportunities. As it is a more general type of purpose, I might be meeting various different businesses when I am there depending on how things progress. I am wondering what type I should apply, F or M or even just L type? Should I just get one of the companies I am going to meet to send me an invitation letter as I don't even know how many companies and which other companies I am going to meet.

Also, what is the difference between invitation letter and the confirmation of letter of invitation? It is a bit confusing. And do I need both?

James, you'd better apply for a M type. It's ok that just one company sents you an invitation letter. It is different from the confirmation of letter or invitation letter given by duly authorized unit. Usually, it is issued by local municipal or provincial Foreign Affairs Office. And your business companies can help you apply for this.

I just wanted to further clarify about the difference between the confirmation letter and invitation letter. Initially I was just thinking for a company I am going to visit to write an invitation letter and fax to me. But from what you described, it seems to be a bit more complicate than that.

From the article above, it seems to me that all I need is an invitation letter issued by the Chinese business. Am I correct?

Yes, you just need the invitation letter issued by your trade partner in China. The invitation letter or invitation confirmation letter from the duly authorized unit is not required in your case.
