Air ticket requirements

Hi there, I hold a US passport and need to go to Guangzhou for a business trip. If I hold a ticket that says New York, Guangzhou, Hong Kong, New York, will that satisfy for the criteria or will I have to purchase a separate ticket for Hong Kong to New York so that the trip ends in Hong Kong? thank you.
