About:Chinese Names

Chinese homes traditionally has a board with 2 characters representing the inhabitants surname.

I would like to obtain the list of these 2- character and also the surname they represent. How and where to obtain this information? Thanks.

Low, you are right. In ancient times, males had the absolute leadership at home. Therefore, a family's residence was usually named after the husband's surname. For example, Wang Fu (王府, Wang's Residence in English) means that the residence belongs to a family named Wang.
