About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Phuket-Beijing-Kuala Lumpur

Hello. I am a US passport holder and plan on flying from Phuket to Beijing (with a 5-hour layover in Kuala Lumpur), staying in Beijing less than 72 hours and then flying to Kuala Lumpur to stay one day and then fly back to Phuket. Would I qualify for the visa free transit? Not sure if the layover in Malaysia counts as the first country, or is it the original departure country which would be Thailand?

In this case, Malaysia counts as the first country, so I'm afraid you are not qualified for the free transit.
