About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

I arrive in Shanghai via Hong Kong, and in order to avail myself of the 72 hr transit visa.

does my onward journey need to be another destination (other than Hong Kong) or can it be back to Hong Kong?

Yes, your onward journey should be another destination other than Hong Kong and mainland China. Otherwise, you need to apply for an L type.
