applying for visa extension while outside china

is it possible to extend a student type while one is outside of china, i.e. have a friend take my passport to the psb or hire a agency service to do it?

Generally  speaking, the applicant should submit the extension application to the local Exit and Entry Administration in person and take an intervew. However, I heard that some agencies can help with the applcation. If you cannot get back, you can try to find an agency to help you or just apply for another X type.
