About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Am I required to fly the same airline in order to access the 72hr visa free?

We would like to fly from Australia to Shanghai (72hrs) then onwards to Hong Kong. Are we required to purchase the flights with the same airline in order to qualify for the transit G type? Or can we fly one airline Australia to Shanghai and another airline to Hong Kong?

The same airline is not necessary for applying the 72-hour free transit. You can use two different airlines to finish your trip, but just to show the onward ticket to HK with confirmed seat.
