Chinese daughter in law has me baffled!

My son worked very hard to select very nice Christmas gifts for his new wife, but she didn't get him anything.... at all. I'd really like to understand why. She is Chinese, is very intelligent and well educated, and has been in the USA for 5 years. She appears to love my son very much. Surely she knows by now how important Christmas is. Is there some cultural reason for this? Also, I really want to grow close to her, but she doesn't appear to care to make an effort to get to know me or our family better. Any help appreciated!

Hi, Laina, about the gift, it is very normal that the female alway receive gifts, but seldom send gifts for males, even during the Christmas. So I think your son's new wife may be affected by the situation in China.

About the second issue, it is not every easy to tell the reasons. In Chinese traditional culture and custom, the relationship between wife and her husband's mother is always a tough problem. It is very hard to make this relationship well. Probably, it is because of this, she has that kind of attitude. Or she may be a shy girl on handling relationship. I think you can ask your son to provide some help. With time passed, your relationship will improve a lot, I am sure. Good luck with you ~
