About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

If the third country is purely a transfer point on the return journey, does this qualify as the 3rd?

My plan is to visit Guangzhou for the 72hrs from New Zealand and using Bangkok as a transfer airport.
The tickets and flights would be different so would this qualify?

If you can show your onward ticket to Bangkok from Guangzhou with confirmed seat and visa to Thailand, you are able to enjoy the 72-hour free transit. Please do not worry.
