About:Marriage Registration in China

Foreign-related (international) marriage later registered in China

If I as an American citizen I marry my Chinese fiancee in the Bahamas, and we later wish to live together in china, how does my Chinese wife go about registering our marriage in China? And does she need to have the family register (hokau) in order to accomplish this? I understand that China accepts the marriage as valid according to the laws of the country in which the marriage occurred, but my question involves what process is necessary in order to register the marriage in China.

To register your marriage in China, first you should have your marriage certificate notarized and authenticated in the Chinese embassy in Bahamas. After you return China, take your notarized certificate, your wife's household registration book , ID card and submit them to the local police station for registration.

This is James Adams once again asking 2nd question. Is there any way to register the foreign-related marriage with the Chinese authorities whereby the household register is not required? The member of the family who is now holding the household register will not relinquish it to the Chinese woman in order to register the marriage.

Hi, James, as I know, the household is necessary for register. If the woman really cannot get the household, you two are suggested to go to the local PSB for consulting. Probably, they can just change it in their system. This is my opinion for reference and the PSB has the final right to decide it.
