About:Marriage Registration in China

Register a wedding abroad in China

Hi,
I got married in Belgium this October (my wife is Chinese, I'm Belgian). How do we register our wedding in China so we are also officially married for Chinese government?

Did you get regsitered in Belguim at local government?
If you already got registered there, you are unable to get registered again in China. If you are not registered, you are able to do it in China. You need to prepare a single status certitifcate and get stamped at city hall and get signature from your mayor, then get stamp from Foreign Affairs Bureau and then get authenticated at local Chinese embassy. Then you can take this certificiate as well as your valid visa to China and your passport to go to a Chinese Civil Affairs Bureau to get married with your wife. BTW, your wife needs to prepare her single status certificiate and her household register and ID card.

Hi Bert,

Thanks for the extensive reply. No, we got officially married in Belgium. So my wife prepared all the materials (birth certificate, single status certificate) from China, got them legalized and translated, to be able to use them in Belgium.

Then maybe my question should be: how should my wife register herself as married? Because for the Chinese government, she is still single ??

Oh, I see. Your wife need to take your marriage certificate to go to the Chinese embassy in Belgium to get the certificate notarized. Then she needs to take the marriage certificate with its related notarization certificate, her ID card and her household register in China to go to their local PSB to change the status. The staff of the PSB will check these documents and then change her single status to married on the household. That is enough.
