Zurich(Switzerland)-Frankfurt(Germany)-Beijing-Bangkok

Hi, on Saturday a friend and myself are flying to Bangkok and we're having a 8 hour stopover in Beijing. Do we have to ask before the flight for a free transit or do we have to go to the immigration counter in Beijing?
How much time does it take in China to get the free transit and to get back in the airport after the visit to the city? If the wait is really long, then the 8 hours could be not enough time to do something nice.

Patrick, you can apply for 24 hour free transit after arrival at the airport. Prepare your passports and onward air tickets. Time for going through the formalities may be a few minutes, if there is a queue, the time may be longer. It takes 40 to 50 minutes from the airport to downtown in case of no traffic jam. Deducting the boarding time, you still have about four hours to do something else.

Is there a special counter for this permit or do I just go to the entry/exit counter? Do I have to pay any fee?

How long does the train take to downtown? Or is the taxi not that expensive in comparison to the train?

Since you can only enjoy the 24-hour free transit, there is no special counter, but just go to the entry/exit counter. It is free to apply for the stay permit.

The subway train takes around 70 to 80 minutes including the transfering between trains. Comparing to the trains, the taxis are expensive. Would you mind tell me your general destination or direction in city proper? Actually, there are several airport shuttle bus lines available, so you may try them. It takes similar time with the taxi if there is no traffic jam.
