What did a compass look like?

The earliest compass isn't a fish. It's a natural lodestone. Chinese people polished it into a spoon. Usually, there is a platform made use of bronze or wood. The spoon is put on the platform. Ancient Chinese rotated the spoon on the platform and then waited the spoon stopped. The handle pointed South and the other side pointed North.
