'Stay' permit - how to apply in China?

Further to Q4 above - how do you apply for a stay permit? do you do this at the airport on arrival or before you depart from your previous country? i.e. the question about stopover in transit for less than 24hours in Guangzhou.

You need to apply for the stay permit when you arrive at the airport. It's actually just a stamp on your passport and of course it is for free.
