Help! Do I need a transit Visa?

I'm an american citizen flying from osaka to kolkata. My flight stops in shanghai pvg for around 3 hours. I don't know if we even change planes because the flight number stays the same. I have a 23.5 hr layover in Kunming next. Do I need it?

You are unable to enjoy the 72-hour free transit, since you stop twice in China. Since your total trasnfering time is over 24 hours, you cannot enjoy the 24-hour free transit, so you need to apply for a Transit G type for your transfering.
